Indonesia Heads Towards Energy Independence

A press release published on the website of The President of The Republic of Indonesia announced that President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated 37 strategic national electricity projects covering 26 power plants with a total capacity of 3.2 gigawatts, as well as 11 transmission networks and substations in 18 provinces. The inauguration event was centered in the Jatigede Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) area, Sumedang Regency, West Java, on Monday (20/1/25,) and was connected virtually to other locations.

In his remarks, President Prabowo expressed his pride in this great achievement. The Head of State also appreciated the hard work and cooperation of all parties who have made this project a reality.

“Maybe it needs to be verified that this is the largest energy project in the world, maybe the one we inaugurated, 3.2 gigawatts at once. Of course, this is the work of the entire Indonesian nation, the hard work of the nation’s sons and daughters from all agencies, all institutions and agencies,” said President Prabowo.

In addition to the power plant, the project also includes the construction of a transmission network of 739.71 circuit kilometers (kms) and a substation with a capacity of 1,740 megavolt ampere (MVA). The President emphasized that this infrastructure is an important foundation to support the economic transformation towards an industrial country.

“We want to be a modern country, a developed country, we want to improve the welfare of the Indonesian people, we want to eliminate poverty from the earth of Indonesia. For that, energy is very vital, we have quite large natural resources and we now have the ability to carry out this transformation,” said the President.

President Prabowo also targeted energy independence in the next five years, including the cessation of fuel imports. President Prabowo is optimistic that Indonesia will not only become an independent country, but also become one of the main players in the global energy transformation.

“Indeed, we must be self-sufficient in energy and our target is that we will be 100 percent self-sufficient in energy. I believe that in the not too distant future we will no longer import fuel from abroad. I am confident that in 5 years we will no longer import fuel,” said the President.

Meanwhile, President Director of PT PLN Darmawan Prasodjo on a separate occasion said that the success of this project cannot be separated from the support of the government under the leadership of President Prabowo. According to him, the projects have become much smoother and become one of the achievements in the 100-day program of President Prabowo Subianto’s government.

“The challenges regarding licensing can be resolved quickly, the land acquisition problem can also be resolved quickly. We get extraordinary support from the Red and White cabinet. The challenges and investment problems can also be resolved immediately, quickly,” said Darmawan.

Also present at the inauguration were Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir, Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot, Acting Governor of West Java Bey Machmudin, Elected Governor of West Java Dedi Mulyadi, and President Director of PT PLN Darmawan Prasodjo.
