JAKARTA – Indonesia’s national tourism investment target for 2026 is set at 63.5 trillion rupiah, as outlined in the national medium-term development plan.
However, based on actual achievements in 2025, investment remains heavily concentrated in just three areas: Bali, Jakarta, and the Riau Islands.
Uneven Distribution Across Priority Destinations
The government has focused on three “regenerative” destinations and 10 other priority locations.
Rizki Handayani, Acting Deputy for Industry and Investment at the Ministry of Tourism, revealed that 70% of realized investment went to just three regenerative destinations, despite a 65% target spread across 13 priority locations.
“This indicates that other priority destinations still have very small shares,” she said during the 2026 National Tourism Coordination Meeting in Jakarta.
“The Ministry of Tourism is pushing to strengthen synergies in order to expand investment to priority destinations and other regions with great potential to grow.”
To address this, local governments are encouraged to improve the readiness of tourism investment projects, making them more mature and attractive to investors.
Supporting infrastructure, connectivity, and diversification of tourism products and services must also be strengthened.
Creating a conducive investment climate through regulatory simplification and legal certainty is another key factor in building investor confidence.
Global Trends and Shifting Traveler Patterns
Ni Made Ayu Marthini, Deputy for Marketing, stated that geopolitical conflicts and rising oil prices are disrupting tourist flows from Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas.
Despite this, the Ministry remains optimistic.
“The Ministry of Tourism has asked us to create a forum where regions with projects can be matched with potential investors,” Handayani added.
Global flight bookings rose 4% from March to June 2026, signaling strong travel demand.
However, patterns have shifted to short-haul and intra-Asia routes, with Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Oceania becoming “safe corridors.”
Six key trends now shape tourist preferences: nature and adventure, eco-friendly tourism, culinary and cultural experiences, wellness, and bleisure (business plus leisure).
The Ministry has also launched an artificial intelligence platform called MaiA on its official tourism website to help travelers find inspiration and plan trips.
