Indonesian wellness tourism is taking center stage as the country seeks new partnerships with South Korean investors. Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana extended a formal invitation during her working visit to Seoul, highlighting Indonesia’s strong commitment to building a globally competitive wellness tourism industry. Her first agenda in South Korea was the Tourism Investment Meeting, where she emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation.

“Today we open the door to various investment opportunities, supported by strong policy commitments, national investment infrastructure, and a tourism sector designed for growth,” said Minister Widiyanti at the ARA Meeting Room, Four Seasons Hotel Seoul, on Monday, September 8, 2025.

Indonesia Wellness Tourism as a Global Growth Driver

The global wellness industry is expanding rapidly, with growing demand for authentic and transformative experiences. According to the Global Wellness Institute, the sector reached a value of US$6.32 trillion in 2023. It is projected to grow to nearly US$10 trillion by 2029, supported by a compound annual growth rate of 7.44 percent.

Indonesia holds a strong position within this booming market. The country ranks sixth among the largest wellness economies in Asia-Pacific and third in terms of fastest growth. Its rich cultural traditions, many recognized by UNESCO as intangible heritage, add a unique authenticity that resonates with global travelers. This cultural depth provides a competitive edge as wellness increasingly becomes a premium travel experience.

South Korea Investors as Strategic Partners

South Korea has long been a vital source market for Indonesian tourism, and it is also regarded as a trusted partner with shared values of sustainability. Minister Widiyanti emphasized the importance of collaboration, noting that Korea’s deep experience and forward-looking vision align closely with Indonesia’s development goals.

By extending this invitation, Indonesia aims to strengthen economic ties while creating opportunities for shared prosperity. The Minister underscored that wellness tourism provides not only economic potential but also a platform for cultural exchange and sustainable growth.

Bali Wellness Travel and Emerging Destinations

Bali remains Indonesia’s flagship destination for wellness tourism. More than 23 percent of international visitors to the island identify wellness as their primary motivation. From authentic Balinese spa rituals to Javanese healing practices, the country offers experiences deeply rooted in tradition and culture.

“This is why more than 23 percent of tourists visiting Bali cite wellness as their main motivation for traveling,” Minister Widiyanti explained. She added that destinations beyond Bali are also gaining recognition. Yogyakarta, Solo, and Sumba are emerging as wellness hubs, offering unique practices and heritage experiences that attract global attention. Together, these destinations highlight Indonesia’s ability to diversify its tourism landscape.

Expanding Investment Opportunities in Sustainable Tourism

Wellness tourism may be the highlight, but investment opportunities extend across multiple sectors. Minister Widiyanti highlighted eco-tourism, marine biodiversity, cultural tourism, and healthcare as areas ready for growth. She also introduced the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Bali, designed as a hub for medical and wellness tourism.

The SEZ represents Indonesia’s commitment to providing high-quality healthcare and wellness experiences within a sustainable tourism framework. “We invite you to walk with us, invest, and grow together toward a prosperous future,” she concluded, signaling Indonesia’s readiness to collaborate with international partners.

Building a Shared Future

Indonesia is positioning itself as a leader in global wellness tourism, and South Korea stands out as a strategic partner in this journey. Minister Widiyanti’s call to action highlights the shared vision of sustainable development and mutual prosperity. By combining Indonesia’s cultural wealth with South Korea’s investment potential, the partnership promises to create transformative experiences for travelers while delivering lasting benefits for local communities.
