Pindad Maung: Indonesia’s Soon to Be National Car

Pindad Maung is gaining attention as Indonesia considers making it the country’s national car. Government officials have highlighted its potential to strengthen the domestic automotive industry. At the same time, PT Pindad is preparing to introduce a civilian version, making this tactical vehicle more accessible to the public.

Government’s Push for the Pindad Maung National Car

The Indonesian government is reviewing Pindad Maung as a strong candidate for a national car. Minister of Investment and Downstreaming, Rosan Roeslani, stated that discussions are ongoing about the vehicle’s role in Indonesia’s future. “We already have Maung, and we will work on its further development,” he said after a limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto on February 6, 2025.

This aligns with Indonesia’s vision of expanding its domestic automotive market. By promoting locally manufactured vehicles, the government aims to boost investment in the sector while reducing reliance on foreign brands.

Advancing Indonesia’s Automotive Industry With Local Innovation

PT Pindad plays a key role in Indonesia’s push for automotive self-sufficiency. Pindad Maung is a product of local innovation, with 70% of its components sourced from domestic manufacturers. This high level of local content supports the national economy and strengthens the country’s industrial capabilities.

Originally designed for military use, Pindad Maung has demonstrated durability and reliability. The government’s initiative to transition it into a national car would reinforce Indonesia’s ability to produce world-class vehicles while fostering homegrown innovation.

Pindad Maung’s Transition to an Electric Vehicle

In line with Indonesia’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, PT Pindad is exploring an electric version of Maung. The company is already developing the Morino EV, an electric tactical vehicle designed for high mobility. With a 160 HP electric powertrain and a battery capacity of 292V (150,000 mAh), the Morino EV can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h with a range of 170 km.

Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin recently visited PT Pindad to review the production process. He also inspected Maung’s third-generation electric variant, which is expected to be unveiled by President Prabowo soon. This development signals Indonesia’s commitment to sustainable automotive advancements.

Civilian Market Entry: Bringing Pindad Maung to the Public

Besides its potential as a national car, PT Pindad is working to introduce Maung to the civilian market. The company is currently undergoing certification with the Ministry of Transportation. “We are preparing certification with the Ministry of Transportation and the Vehicle Feasibility Testing and Certification Center (BPLJSKB),” said Prima Kharisma, PT Pindad’s Director of Technology and Development.

Public interest in Maung has surged, especially after President Prabowo adopted it as an official presidential vehicle. To meet civilian needs, PT Pindad plans to modify the design for improved comfort and usability. However, the company has yet to announce the final price of the civilian model.

Prima hopes the certification process will conclude by the end of February 2025, paving the way for mass production. “Once certification is complete, the next step will be mass production,” he explained.

The Future of Pindad Maung in Indonesia’s Automotive Industry

Pindad Maung stands at the center of Indonesia’s automotive transformation. As the government explores its role as a national car, its shift to the civilian market and electric development make it a key player in the country’s future. If plans move forward as expected, Pindad Maung could shape Indonesia’s automotive landscape for years to come.
