Tourism Sector Grows Amid Global Challenges, Indonesia’s Foreign Exchange Reaches IDR 68 Trillion

Indonesia Foreign Exchange

Indonesia’s tourism sector continues to show a positive trend despite global economic dynamics. The Ministry of Tourism recorded foreign tourist visits from January–April 2026 at 4.68 million, an increase of 8.24% compared to the same period last year.

This growth also boosted tourism foreign exchange. In the first quarter of 2026, the sector generated US$ 4.05 billion, equal to Rp 68.28 trillion, up 6.30% compared to the first quarter of 2025.

Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, emphasized that this achievement must bring wider benefits to society. She said that tourism development should not only focus on increasing tourist numbers and foreign exchange, but also strengthen the people’s economy.

“Tourism is not only pushed to increase visits, foreign exchange, investment, and contribution to GDP. Equally important, tourism growth must be felt directly by the people,” said Minister Widiyanti during a meeting with the House of Representatives at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday (June 3, 2026).

Strengthening Village Tourism

One of the government’s strategies is to strengthen the role of village tourism as a tool for equal development. The Ministry of Tourism continues to encourage community empowerment, certification of sustainable village tourism, and expansion of halal certification for MSMEs.

Besides village tourism, equal economic benefits are also promoted through regional events. The Karisma Event Nusantara program, held in 15 provinces, involved 20,669 workers and 3,936 MSMEs, with total economic activity reaching more than Rp 45.57 billion.

“Events are not only a space to promote destinations, but also a space for the people’s economy. There are MSMEs, artists, creative workers, communities, transport providers, culinary businesses, accommodation, and many other supporting sectors moving together,” said Minister Widiyanti.

Support for Local Governments

The Ministry of Tourism also strengthens support for local governments through assistance programs covering 38 provinces.

This support includes training on tourism safety, creating regional promotional content, and facilitating event organization to improve destination quality and encourage tourist movement.

Looking ahead, the government targets tourism development that is more high‑quality, inclusive, and sustainable through collaboration with House of Representatives, local governments, ministries and agencies, industry players, communities, and the public.

“Tourism must become an economic strength that grows with the people and gives the greatest benefit to Indonesia,” Minister Widiyanti concluded.
