PLN Renewable Energy Certificate sales surged by 14% year-on-year (YoY), reaching 13.68 terawatt-hours (TWh) by June 2025. This increase highlights the growing demand for clean electricity in Indonesia’s industrial and commercial sectors. PT PLN (Persero) reported the milestone as part of its expanding Green as a Service (GEAS) program, which aims to promote clean energy use through transparent and internationally recognized instruments.

What Is a Renewable Energy Certificate?

A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) is an innovative green product developed by PLN to help customers gain formal recognition for their use of renewable energy. Each REC certifies that 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity were generated from renewable sources.

Moreover, sold at just IDR 35,000 per unit, RECs offer an accessible way for businesses to support the transition to sustainable energy. The certification remains transparent, accountable, and internationally acknowledged, making it an attractive solution for environmentally conscious companies.

PLN Green Energy Sales See Significant Growth

Since its launch in 2020, PLN’s REC program has experienced remarkable growth. Sales began at 308,610 megawatt-hours (MWh) in 2021 and jumped to 1,762,953 MWh in 2022. In 2023, REC sales more than doubled to 3,543,638 MWh. Then, they increased further to 5,382,245 MWh in 2024. By the first half of 2025 alone, REC sales had already reached 2,689,117 MWh, bringing the total volume to 13.68 TWh.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo stated, “PLN is committed to boosting industrial competitiveness by offering green electricity services that are 100% supplied by our renewable energy plants through REC. We are ready to serve the green electricity needs of the business and industrial sectors with a fast and simple process.”

  • PT Asahimas Chemical
  • PT South Pacific Viscose
  • PT Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper Tbk
  • PT Air Liquide Indonesia
  • PT Smelting
  • PT Ceria Metalindo Prima

In response to this partnership, Imron Hamzah, Head of ID SMS Department at PT HM Sampoerna Tbk, expressed appreciation for the collaboration, saying, “Thank you for the cooperation that has continued for the past three years with PLN, and we hope this collaboration will continue to support the growth of green energy usage in Indonesia.”

PLN’s Green Power Sources and Infrastructure

To meet this growing demand, ten PLN power plants currently supply electricity for REC customers. These include geothermal plants in Kamojang, Ulubelu, Lahendong, and Ulumbu.

In addition, hydroelectric facilities such as Cirata, Bakaru, Orya Genyem, Saguling, and Mrica also contribute. PLN further supports this supply with the Lambur mini-hydro power plant. These facilities ensure a consistent and reliable supply of green electricity for businesses aiming to reduce their carbon footprint.

General Manager of PT Inecda Plantation, Khamdi, praised the initiative, saying, “We hope this partnership with PLN will continue, bringing positive impact through sustainable business practices and implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles to realize sustainable development and support the Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs).”

Driving Indonesia’s Clean Energy Future

Looking ahead, as more companies transition to cleaner operations, PLN continues to expand its Renewable Energy Certificate services to meet rising demand. Darmawan noted, “More and more companies, both domestic and international, are relying on PLN’s REC to supply their green electricity. We are confident that this service will continue to grow.”

Ultimately, with verified renewable sources and strong institutional support, the REC program is poised to play a key role in Indonesia’s energy transition and long-term sustainability goals.
