In a press release published on the website of The President of the Republic of Indonesia, President Prabowo Subianto, reiterated Indonesia’s position in strengthening the multilateral system and economic cooperation of developing countries in the second session of the 2025 BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday (6/7/25), where leaders held discussions with the theme “Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence.”
In his statement in Brazil, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said that President Prabowo emphasized the importance of reviving multilateralism amidst the dynamics of an increasingly multipolar world. According to him, the President also encouraged strengthening economic partnerships between global south countries, as well as expanding the use of the New Development Bank (NDB).
“This economic partnership of developing countries is very important and it is hoped that the utilization of the New Development Bank can be increased,” said Airlangga.
Indonesia itself, Airlangga continued, has expressed its readiness to actively join the NDB. This participation is important so that Indonesia can access development financing that is in line with the green transformation agenda and sustainable economic growth.
“We know that it was reported earlier in the New Development Bank that there are several projects being handled, including clean energy projects, then infrastructure, then also several projects related to sustainability and green. Currently, 120 projects are being handled and the value is around 39 billion,” he continued.
In this second session, Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir (Tata) said that President Prabowo also proposed the “South-South Economic Compact” initiative. According to Deputy Foreign Minister Tata, the proposal aims for BRICS countries to become a driving force to provide wider access to global south countries.
“The goal here is for the BRICS countries to become the driving force to provide broader access to global south countries for trade, to also further integrate their economies to become part of the supply chain,” said the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
