Bali’s arak, a traditional distilled liquor made from coconut or rice, is making big moves on the global stage. In June 2025, around 20,000 to 30,000 bottles of this iconic Balinese arak will be exported to China, marking its first major step into the international market.
This isn’t just a one-off deal. Chinese importers sampled alcoholic drinks from multiple countries and chose Bali’s arak for its “distinctive flavor and strong character”. The product comes from small-scale producers in Buleleng, an area in North Bali known for its craftsmanship.
Bali’s Arak Industry Gains Momentum with Government Support
This success has strong backing from the Bali Provincial Government. Since 2020, the government has enforced Governor Regulation No. 1 of 2020, a law designed to legalize and improve the quality of traditional fermented and distilled drinks like arak.
Thanks to this regulation, local producers are now operating with clear standards and full legal support. The government has also provided training and guidance, helping arak evolve from a village craft into a professionally managed, export-ready product.
A Golden Opportunity for Foreign Investors
For expats in Indonesia and looking for a smart investment, this is a great opportunity. Arak is gaining serious interest abroad, and the infrastructure to support its growth is already in place.
There are openings in production, packaging, branding, logistics, and international distribution. This is a rare chance to invest in a product that’s both culturally significant and commercially promising.
As one official noted, “This is proof that our traditional products can compete in the global market if managed properly.”
Bali’s arak is no longer just a local secret. It’s becoming a global product with rising demeaning and strong government support. For investors looking to be part of something meaningful and profitable, this is the moment to get involved.
