In a statement delivered at the signing ceremony of the National Strategic Project agreement at Wiraraja Green Renewable Energy and Smart Eco Industry Park in Batam, Riau Islands, on Monday (26/8/24,) Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, predicted Indonesia would become a major player in the semiconductor industry, according to reporting from Antara News.
“Last month, the semiconductor team from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) came to Batam to see the semiconductor ecosystem,” he said, adding that the vision of Indonesia to be one of the seven countries prioritized as global semiconductor manufacturers was discussed during the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF).
“The semiconductor ecosystem is expected to continue to be developed so it becomes the anchor of the economic engine. From the government, we will prepare the human resources,” he said.
One of the main focuses of this development is the localization of semiconductor and sodium-ion battery production, which is expected to make Indonesia more attractive to global investors and prove that sodium-ion batteries–as a new alternative in the battery industry–can be successfully developed in Indonesia, says Antara News.
“Therefore, I hope that with the existence of this industry, the number of workers will increase significantly,” the minister said..
According to Antara News, the development of the semiconductor and battery industry is expected to push up the number of workers and bring about significant economic growth in the Riau Islands.
