Bank Indonesia Launches New Rupiah Banknotes

In celebration of Indonesia’s 77th anniversary on August 17, the government and Bank Indonesia (BI) have just launched seven new banknotes, Tempo are reporting.

“I, Perry Warjiyo, Governor of Bank Indonesia, together with the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia Mrs. Sri Mulyani Indrawati, officially launched seven new banknotes for the 2022 issuance of rupiah as legal tender throughout the territory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia,” said Perry at the launch of the 2022 rupiah notes on Thursday, August 18.

The new notes are Rp100,000, Rp50,000, Rp20,000, Rp10,000, Rp5,000, Rp2,000, and Rp1,000.

The new 2022 banknotes still maintain the main image of national heroes, as well as Indonesian cultural themes such as images of dance, natural scenery, and flora on the back similar to that in the 2016 issuance. There are three notable changes in the new banknotes, namely a sharper colour design, a more reliable safety element, and better material resistance.

All rupiah notes or coins that have been previously issued are declared to remain valid as legal tender throughout the Republic of Indonesia as long as they have not been revoked and withdrawn from circulation by Bank Indonesia.
