The Norwegian government and the provincial government of Central Java are exploring ways to cooperate in the transition to sustainable energy, environmental restoration and waste management according to reporting from Antara News.
The potential cooperation was discussed in a meeting between Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia Rut Kruger Giverin and Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo on Thursday.
According to Giverin, Norway has several technologies that can be implemented in Central Java regarding energy transition. “There are many opportunities for Norwegian companies to help here or there are technologies that will be very interesting to be utilized here, such as harnessing solar energy from the ocean,” she said.
Norway has extensive experience in ocean technology installation, she added.
Giverin called for this opportunity and potential to be followed up with cooperation between Norway and the Central Java provincial government. She saw the meeting with Pranowo as an extraordinary opportunity, report Antara News.
In response, Pranowo said that the Central Java provincial government is ready to explore cooperation in energy transition, as Norway has experience in that field. Antara News say that he is also open to cooperation in environmental restoration in coastal areas and mangroves as well as in waste management.
“Norway has vast experience and technologies. We will try to develop that, and we expect that this will be good cooperation in the future,” he stated.
This was not the first time that Norway has come forward to cooperate with an Indonesian province. Norway is one of the donor countries to have offered to help with the implementation of the Sembilang Dangku landscape programme in South Sumatra.
The programme was intended to realize a green economy with the surrounding community participating to facilitate management in order to ensure no harm to the environment.
