Exclusive Economic Zone and Trade Discussions With Vietnam

President Jokowi and the Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bui Thanh Son, and a delegation at the Merdeka Palace, met on July 20, 2022 to discuss trade, investments and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) between the two countries according to a press release from the website of The President of The Republic of Indonesia.

During the meeting, President Jokowi gave three directives to Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi who will conduct a joint commission meeting with the Vietnamese Foreign Minister.

“First in the trade sector. If you look at the trend, then trade between the two countries continues to increase. The USD 10-billion trade fulfilment target has been exceeded, therefore the President said it is important for both countries to set new targets for the next few years. We will discuss this later at the meeting of the two foreign ministers,” said Foreign Minister Retno in her statement after accompanying the President.

Then the second in the field of investment. According to Foreign Minister Retno, Indonesia’s investment in Vietnam is quite large, which is already more than USD 600-million. To the Vietnamese Foreign Minister, President Jokowi also entrusted Indonesian investors in Vietnam to get fair treatment.

“Of course, by creating conducive conditions for investors. Of course, the investment of both parties will continue to increase,” added Retno.

The third message conveyed by President Jokowi was related to negotiations on the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) boundary between the two countries. President Jokowi conveyed the importance of the technical team of negotiators speeding up the negotiations so that they can be resolved immediately.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese Foreign Minister, among others, expressed his appreciation and congratulations to Indonesia in overcoming Covid-19. In addition, the Vietnamese Foreign Minister also praised Indonesia’s leadership in the G20.

“Also conveyed Vietnam’s full support for Indonesia’s chairmanship of ASEAN next year, in 2023,” he said.
