Indonesia’s foreign tourist arrivals reached 1.42 million in June 2025, marking a continued upward trend in the country’s post-pandemic travel recovery. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), this figure reflects an 8.42% increase from May and an 18.2% rise compared to June 2024.
Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, Pudji Ismartini, confirmed the milestone during a press briefing on Friday, August 1. “With this, total foreign tourist arrivals reached 1.42 million, or up 8.42% month-on-month and up 18.20% year-on-year,” she stated as reported by Bisnis.com.
Surge in Indonesia Foreign Tourist Arrivals
The majority of foreign tourist arrivals in June 2025 entered Indonesia through primary entry points, totaling 1,248,495 visits. An additional 167,470 visits came through border checkpoints. The combined total contributed to the overall figure of 1.42 million.
From January to June 2025, Indonesia recorded 7.05 million foreign tourist arrivals. This marked a 9.44% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The rise aligns with increased international flight frequencies, particularly to popular destinations like Bali. “And the increase in tourist arrivals through Ngurah Rai Airport is partly driven by the rise in flight numbers to Bali,” Pudji added.
Malaysia Leads Tourist Visits in June
Malaysia led the list of top source countries for foreign tourist arrivals in June, contributing 236,400 visits or 16.7% of the total. Singapore followed with 183,700 visits, while Australia and China contributed 154,200 and 113,500 visits respectively.
“The number of foreign tourist arrivals to Indonesia during June 2025 was dominated by tourists from Malaysia, totaling 236.42 thousand visits or 16.70%,” Pudji noted during the press conference. The figures show strong regional travel activity and the continuing appeal of Indonesia for neighboring countries.
Spending Declines Despite Higher Arrivals
Despite the rise in visitor numbers, average tourist spending dropped notably in the second quarter of 2025. Foreign tourists spent an average of US$1,199.71 per visit, down from US$1,277.17 in the first quarter.
“Average foreign tourist spending in Q2 2025 is US$1,199.71 per visit, lower than in Q1 2025 and Q2 2024,” Pudji explained. For comparison, average spending in Q2 2024 reached US$1,443.72.
The decline may relate to shorter visits or shifts in spending habits. The average length of stay in Q2 2025 was 10.12 nights, a drop from 10.94 nights in Q1.
Where Tourists Spend the Most
Accommodation remained the highest expenditure category for tourists, accounting for 37.48% of total spending in Q2 2025. Food and beverages followed at 19.53%, while shopping and souvenirs made up 11.17%.
“Per visit, accommodation is the largest expenditure, followed by food and beverages, souvenir shopping, entertainment, and local tour packages. This showed no change between the first and second quarters,” Pudji said. The spending breakdown remained relatively stable, even as overall per-visit spending declined.
Growth Continues, Spending Patterns Shift
Indonesia’s tourism sector continues to show strong recovery momentum, supported by rising foreign tourist arrivals led by regional markets such as Malaysia and Singapore. However, the drop in average spending and shorter stays reflect changing travel behavior.
Tourism operators and policymakers may need to adjust strategies to maintain value-driven tourism, encouraging longer stays and higher visitor spending while sustaining growth in arrival numbers.
