The Silver Investment Trend: What Indonesians Are Buying Now

Silver Bars illustrating the Silver investment trend in Indonesia

The silver investment trend is quietly gaining momentum in Indonesia as more investors turn their attention away from gold. While gold has long been the preferred precious metal, recent shifts reveal that silver’s affordability and growing industrial demand have made it an attractive alternative. Indonesians are increasingly exploring silver to diversify their portfolios and seize new investment opportunities amid fluctuating gold prices.

The Silver Investment Trend in 2025

In 2025, the silver investment trend is becoming more apparent across Indonesian markets. Traders at the Gold Center in Cikini, Jakarta, report that gold sales have normalized compared to the rush seen just two months ago. Isma, a gold trader, explained, “People are still buying, yes. In fact, when the price was high, many were buying. But now that it’s slightly lower, purchases are back to normal.” This calm in gold demand coincides with rising interest in silver, which many find more accessible due to its lower price point.

Isma also pointed out a key reason behind fluctuating gold sales. “Consumers tend to buy more when the price is high rather than when it’s stable or corrected,” she said. This behavior contrasts with silver, where demand has steadily increased even as gold cools off. The silver investment trend reflects a broader shift in how Indonesians manage risk and capitalize on precious metal opportunities.

Growing Preference for Affordable Metals

One of the strongest drivers behind this trend is silver’s affordability. Many Indonesian investors who once focused solely on gold now find silver a practical choice. Nendia, another seller at the same center, noted, “Since the beginning of this year, people have been buying silver—even to the point of having to pre-order it.” Silver’s lower cost enables investors to buy in smaller quantities, making it ideal for middle-income individuals who want to start or expand their investment portfolios without committing large sums.

Silver also offers an easy entry point for those new to precious metals. Investors appreciate that they can purchase tangible assets such as silver bars or coins with less capital while still benefiting from the market’s potential growth. This accessibility plays a significant role in the growing popularity of silver.

Industrial Demand for Silver Continues to Grow

Beyond affordability, silver’s strong industrial demand adds to its investment appeal. Sectors like renewable energy and electronics consume large quantities of silver annually. This industrial use provides an intrinsic value base, helping to stabilize prices over time. As Indonesia and the global economy push for greener technologies, silver demand looks set to grow further.

This connection between industrial use and investment value differentiates silver from gold, which is primarily driven by jewelry and investment demand. Silver’s dual role supports the silver investment trend, as investors anticipate continued price gains linked to technological growth and industrial expansion.

Silver vs Gold: Shifting Investment Strategies

The changing preferences between silver and gold also reflect different buying behaviors. Isma observed, “Most customers usually buy 5 grams of gold, but during the recent buying spree, I saw purchases in larger quantities—10, 25, 100, 50 grams.” However, with gold demand settling back to typical levels, silver has started to attract consistent buyers.

Nendia added that while gold buying was stronger during the post-Eid rush, the overall purchasing power for precious metals remains high. “Compared to the post-Eid gold buying frenzy, that was a lot more intense. But demand for gold is still high even though it’s not as crazy as before,” she said. Meanwhile, silver’s rise includes many investors who previously hesitated due to price, now eager to join the market. This shift signals evolving strategies, where silver complements or substitutes gold in portfolios.

Is Silver the New Gold for Investors?

As Indonesia’s precious metals market evolves, silver increasingly positions itself as a viable investment option. Its lower price, combined with industrial demand and growing investor interest, underpins the ongoing silver investment trend. While gold remains a trusted safe haven, silver’s appeal to a broader investor base offers new possibilities.

Investors looking for accessible, liquid, and potentially profitable assets are turning to silver in growing numbers. The silver investment trend may well continue as technological advances and market dynamics keep supporting silver’s value. For Indonesians navigating uncertain economic times, silver offers an attractive path to diversify and build wealth.
