According to a press release published on the website of The President of The Republic of Indonesia, President Prabowo Subianto, held a bilateral meeting with the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Luong Cuong, on the sidelines of the 2024 APEC Summit in Lima, Peru on Friday (15/11/24) focusing on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries.
In his introduction, President Prabowo congratulated President Luong Cuong on his inauguration which took place on October 21, 2024. President Prabowo also appreciated the presence of the Vice President of Vietnam at his inauguration ceremony as President of the Republic of Indonesia the day before.
“Indonesia-Vietnam relations have been established for 70 years very well. We hope to continue to improve this strategic partnership,” said President Prabowo.
President Prabowo also highlighted Vietnam’s long history of struggle against colonialism and emphasized the importance of close relations between the two countries in the Southeast Asian region. President Prabowo stressed Indonesia’s commitment to accelerate the ratification process of the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) agreement and finalize its implementing arrangements.
“Our economic cooperation is very good, and we want to strengthen this cooperation in the future,” said President Prabowo.
Meanwhile, President Luong Cuong expressed appreciation for the strong bilateral relations between Vietnam and Indonesia. He expressed his belief that under President Prabowo’s leadership, Indonesia will continue to achieve significant progress.
“I believe that under your leadership and capacity, you will continue to bring Indonesia to a higher level,” said President Luong Cuong.
President Luong Cuong also proposed upgrading bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership on the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries next year. In addition, he mentioned legal resolutions related to regional issues such as the South China Sea, which have been ratified by the Vietnamese National Assembly, and hoped for Indonesia’s support in international forums, including the UN.
In the economic field, the two leaders discussed potential cooperation to achieve the trade target of USD 18 billion. President Luong Cuong hopes that the two countries can expand the market and improve trade facilities through coordination of related ministries.
“I think we should suggest that both sides can expand their markets and I have asked the relevant ministers to expand our markets,” President Luong Cuong said.
Accompanying President Prabowo at the meeting were Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Special Advisor to the President for National Defense Dudung Abdurachman, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Lima Ricky Suhendar.
