Indonesia, U.S. Discuss Reduced Bilateral Trade Barriers

Tempo are reporting on a meeting between Indonesia’s Economic Affairs Coordinating Minister, Airlangga Hartarto, and the U.S Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Katherine Tai on Thursday where they discussed efforts to reduce bilateral trade barriers.

According to a written statement on Thursday, Oct. 27, they also discussed strategic policy issues and trade disputes that were deemed to comply with the WTO Panel criteria were also discussed, say Tempo.

“Following up on Indonesia’s efforts to fulfill the recommendations and decisions of the WTO DSB, it is hoped that the United States Government can support the settlement of bilateral trade barriers through closing trade disputes which are considered to have fulfilled Indonesia’s obligations,” Airlangga said at the meeting according to a statement on Thursday, October 27.

Ambassador Tai provided an alternative for improving the status of economic relations through various working groups in specific sectors, among others, through upgrading the status of the Indonesia-United States Trade and Investment Facilitation Agreement (TIFA), which has run smoothly so far.

Minister Airlangga also expressed his gratitude for the US’ support for the Indonesian G20 Presidency. “The Indonesian government hopes that the results at this year’s G20 forum can exceed the results of the previous year’s G20,” said Airlangga.

The United States will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in 2023.
